HERBARIUM FOR THE MEDECINE – URBAN ART – AN ARTICLE IN I DO ART NEVEMBER 2023
In 2020, I was entrusted with the task of embellishing the entrance and park areas surrounding
the newly constructed Høgsbo New Specialist Hospital to be build in Gothenburg, Sweden,
through a competitive public tender. My winning proposal, Herbarium for Medicine,
(In danish Herbarium for lægevidenskaben), is a site-specific and contextual installation
that adopts an abstract, non-critical formal language to create spaces for
gathering and moments of respite within the landscape.
The installation seamlessly integrates with its surroundings, offering both aesthetic value and functional
spaces for those who pass through.
CONCEPT BRINGING TOGETHER LAYERS OF LOCAL TELLINGS
The conceptual foundation of the project drew inspiration from several elements:
the rich colors of medicinal herbs, the distinctive shapes of MRI scanners, the movement patterns
within the hospital’s infrastructure, and the materials used in the building itself, particularly
the hospital’s brick construction. By employing both glazed and unglazed brick tiles,
I sought to paint the landscape with a harmonious blend of textures, linking the
history of medicine with the place itself and its intended function.
This article serves as a reflection on the creation of this installation, detailing how the concept evolved,
the challenges faced during the process, and the thoughtful collaborations that made it possible.
It is also an opportunity to express my gratitude to the many partners who contributed to the
realization of this project, without whom it would not have come to fruition.
